Made for Shade Awards Over $20K to Community of Shade Structures
Rapid City Medical Center was happy to support the 11th Annual “An Evening Made for Shade” wine tasting dinner and silent auction on June 14, 2017. Over 150 people attended this year’s event in support of opens in a new windowMade for Shade, a non-profit organization founded by Skin Institute at Rapid City Medical Center dermatologist opens in a new windowLycia Scott-Thornburg, MD. The organization raises funds to provide shade structures to protect local children from the sun’s dangerous rays. The dinner and auction, which took place at the Rushmore Plaza Holiday Inn, raised funds for next year’s grants through ticket sales, sponsorships, auction items and raffle ticket sales, making this the foundation’s most successful event to date.
The event also included a proclamation by council representative Lisa Modrick, on behalf of Mayor Allender, declaring June 14, 2017 Made for Shade Day. Following the proclamation, Sandra Vojta shared her father’s patient experience and why continuing to support organizations such as Made for Shade is so important to our community.
The foundation awarded four grants for shade structures during the event totaling $20,823. Funds for these grants were raised during the 2016 “An Evening Made for Shade” fundraiser. Recipients included Corral Drive Elementary School receiving $15,000 for two large permanent shade structures, Central High School boys’ soccer receiving $1,904 for a 10′ x 20′ portable shade, Stevens High School Athletics receiving $2,592 for a 10’x10′ portable shade and Girl Scouts – Dakota Horizons receiving $1,292 for a 10’x15′ portable shade.
This year Made for Shade was happy to work closely with the Rapid City School district in deciding the location of the two permanent structures. “Corral Drive Elementary School’s playground is the first of many playgrounds we are going to be placing shade structures in,” said Kumar Veluswamy, Facilities Service Manager for the Rapid City School District. ” We reviewed all the playgrounds in the district, prioritized their needs and found that Corral Drive had the best equipment, this review and prioritization allowed our team to be confident in placing the shade structure over equipment that will not be moved and/or retrofitted in the near future,”
The evening wrapped up with the drawing for the beautiful 2BeLoved pendent donated by Riddle’s Jewelry. This year’s winner was MaryAnn Thornburg. This event is made possible with the generous support of our sponsors.
